While Mike, Martin, and Mikey were at scout Camp Makajawan for the week, the rest of us were all by ourselves!
One balmy Saturday afternoon we all loaded up and went to visit a local forest preserve park that had just reopened after an extensive overhaul. While sections of the park were still closed so as to let recently seeded grass take root, there was still much to explore and it was a supremely wonderful evening.
The park is on the grounds of the old Fort Sheridan, which is where many WWII naval aviators trained in the early 1940's, taking off from an airstrip that ran right up to the cliffs overlooking the lake. Local divers spend many hours diving on the wrecks of the planes that didn't get enough airspeed fast enough to avoid landing in the water.
The land has since been donated to the local Forest Preserve district - public land going right up to the Lake Michigan shoreline and a beach. The views are amazing and they have included information along the trails about local birds and birdways.
