Learning outdoor skills is a big part of scouting, with hiking, firebuilding and camping being the Big 3.

Each year of Cub Scouts I took 'my boys' on hikes of varying lengths, teaching them safety, good planning, and orienteering. For this hike, the boys had to choose between one of 3 locations, determining what the weather would be like on the planned date and thus how they needed to dress; what supplies they needed to bring; and what course they would follow - a minimum of 3K.

 

Good news - they all made it back in good shape!
